Living with a brain injury?
About Brain Injury New Zealand
Brain Injury New Zealand (BINZ) is the national body representing 14 regional Brain Injury Associations across the country. We provide advocacy, education, and support to people affected by brain injury and their whānau.
Our History
BINZ traces its roots to the early 1990s when the Stewart family, faced with a lack of support after their son’s brain injury, founded The Stewart Centre. This day center provided workshops, skill-building, and socialization for those with brain injuries. From these beginnings grew our nationwide network of regional Brain Injury Associations.
The Silent Epidemic
Brain injuries occur every 15 minutes in New Zealand – more frequently than cancer diagnoses. The ongoing effects can be complex and unique to each individual. BINZ helps those impacted by brain injury rebuild meaningful lives by connecting them with appropriate services and support.
How We Help
Our regional associations act as information and education hubs. Our Liaison Officers, Educators, and Navigators work in offices and the community to:
- Provide information and resources on brain injury
- Assist with paperwork, meetings, and navigating support systems
- Facilitate support groups and social connections
- Advocate for improved services and understanding of brain injury
- Educate the public and professionals about brain injury
We focus on supporting the whole person – not just their injury. Our goal is to empower those affected by brain injury to live fulfilling lives and reach their full potential.
